Al Gore Challenge to America – What People are Saying
July 28, 2008
In his well-publicized recent speech of July 17th, Al Gore described the current state of climate change, energy demands and the findings from the series of “Solutions Summits” he has held with engineers, scientists and CEOs.
He then issued his Challenge to America stating:
“I’m proposing today a strategic initiative designed to free us from the crises that are holding us down and to regain control of our own destiny. It’s not the only thing we need to do. But this strategic challenge is the lynchpin of a bold new strategy needed to re-power America.
Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years.
This goal is achievable, affordable and transformative. It represents a challenge to all Americans – in every walk of life: to our political leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, engineers, and to every citizen.”
On the Alliance for Climate Protection’s “We Can Solve It” project website reactions from a host of influential leaders share their reactions to the Vice President’s Challenge.
Sen. John McCain:
“Of the goals Gore outlined Thursday for generating more electricity with solar and wind resources, McCain said, ‘If the vice president says it’s doable, I believe it’s doable.’ Source: Associated Press”
Sen. Barack Obama:
“I strongly agree with Vice President Gore that we cannot drill our way to energy independence, but must fast-track investments in renewable sources of energy like solar power, wind power and advanced biofuels, and those are the investments I will make as President.”
