The Gift that Keeps on Giving

Holiday gifts nestled under a brightly decorated evergreen can bring a childlike spark of anticipation to even the most serious of adults.  Now imagine a gift that wraps up both the present and the tree in one package and you have a gift that will be as good to receive as it will be to give.

Pangea Organics, producers of luxurious 100% organic skin care products, has developed a Holiday Pack for 2008 which will feature several of it’s products all responsibly packaged in 100% compostable, biodegradable newsprint packaging made without dyes or glue.  This is “plantable” packaging, so instead of tossing it in the recycling bin, plant the seed-embedded packaging right into the ground to grow a spruce tree!

The Pangea Holiday Gift Packs will be available at select stores including Macy’s, Nordstrom’s and Anthropology this holiday season.

Yahoo Electricity Conservation Progress

EnergyConnect, an industry leader in innovative demand response technologies, has just announced a partnership to provide demand response services to Yahoo! Inc.

During a demand response event, companies that have previously committed to reduce their electricity usage are called upon to ease the strain on the power grid by responding quickly and decreasing their electricity consumption. By cutting back on its electricity use, Yahoo! helps balance the electric grid by freeing up power it would have otherwise been using, helping to prevent rolling blackouts, and limiting the need to bring additional green house gas generating plants on-line.

“Yahoo! is committed to environmental stewardship and we are constantly searching for effective ways to decrease our carbon footprint,” said Christina Page, Director of Climate and Energy Strategy at Yahoo! Inc. “We are pleased to partner with EnergyConnect and see this important program as a complement to our larger commitment to be an environmentally responsible company.”

Al Gore Challenge to America – What People are Saying

In his well-publicized recent speech of July 17th, Al Gore described the current state of climate change, energy demands and the findings from the series of “Solutions Summits” he has held with engineers, scientists and CEOs.

He then issued his Challenge to America stating:

“I’m proposing today a strategic initiative designed to free us from the crises that are holding us down and to regain control of our own destiny. It’s not the only thing we need to do. But this strategic challenge is the lynchpin of a bold new strategy needed to re-power America.

Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years.

This goal is achievable, affordable and transformative. It represents a challenge to all Americans – in every walk of life: to our political leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, engineers, and to every citizen.”

On the Alliance for Climate Protection’s “We Can Solve It” project website reactions from a host of influential leaders share their reactions to the Vice President’s Challenge.

Sen. John McCain:

“Of the goals Gore outlined Thursday for generating more electricity with solar and wind resources, McCain said, ‘If the vice president says it’s doable, I believe it’s doable.’ Source: Associated Press”

Sen. Barack Obama:

“I strongly agree with Vice President Gore that we cannot drill our way to energy independence, but must fast-track investments in renewable sources of energy like solar power, wind power and advanced biofuels, and those are the investments I will make as President.”
